Michalovce has implemented advanced artificial intelligence solutions as part of its strategic initiative to enhance waste management efficiency, optimize city operations, and improve sustainability.
Innovative Pilot Project: A Foundation for the Future
The initiative builds upon the successful pilot project “Modern Technologies – SMART CITY”, which established a robust system for monitoring, identifying, and weighing mixed waste.
Integration of AI and CityCAMAN Analytics
On four waste collection vehicles, IoT devices were installed, featuring certified weighing systems, control units, and antennas for precise identification, weighing, and automated data transmission from each waste container.
RFID technology ensures accurate identification and precise weighing, seamlessly transferring data to a centralized IoT cloud platform.
Complementing these technologies, the project integrates the CityCAMAN Camera System, powered by deep learning and neural networks (AI).
This solution collects valuable metadata on road infrastructure and waste container conditions, enabling optimized asset management and transparent city governance.
Expanding Addressed Waste Weighing and AI Analytics
The next phase expands automated weighing to sorted waste and business waste streams across all waste collection vehicles.
Enhanced features include dual identification using RFID and camera-based systems for reliable data collection and validation through automated control weighing at central facilities.
AI4WasteRecognition Research Collaboration
Michalovce actively participates in the innovative research initiative AI4WasteRecognition, in collaboration with the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology STU Bratislava.
This initiative explores advanced radar-based AI technologies to detect contaminants within sorted waste, enhancing recycling effectiveness and quality.

Through these advanced AI solutions, Michalovce demonstrates how technological innovation can substantially improve community life and environmental responsibility, setting a standard for efficiency in smart city initiatives.
